Do you need underarm sweat glands?

Out of 2 to 4 million sweat glands, only about 2% are found in your underarms. Therefore, after the miraDry treatment, you will sweat normally to maintain your body temperature.

Pre & Post Care

miraDry is a non-surgical treatment designed to permanently reduce underarm sweat, odor, and hair with as little as one treatment, in one hour, and with immediate results.

Shave

Shave both underarms; by the time you come in for your procedure, there will be a little bit of hair growth to identify the area to be treated. If you forget to shave, we will recommend that you reschedule your procedure date.

Loose Clothing

Wear clothes with loose arm holes for easy access to the treatment site, e.g. tank top, sports bra, or camisole.

Plan for the procedure to last an hour.

Ice

Immediately ice the treated area using towel-wrapped ice packs and use non-prescription anti-inflammatory medication to reduce swelling. Continue as needed over the new few days.

Keep Clean

Keep the treated area clean (wash with water and gentle liquid soap) and apply an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment to prevent infection.

Avoid

Avoid shaving or applying antiperspirant, or deodorant for the next few days. If deodorant, or antiperspirant is still desired after the treatment, discard any partially used product and open a new product.

No Exercise

Wait a few days before resuming rigorous exercise and activity.

Loose Clothing

Wear loose fitting tops to avoid underarm irritation for the next few days.

What happens during the procedure?

The treatment is customized for each underarm area with multiple placements of the miraDry handpiece. Local anesthesia is administered to the underarms prior to the procedure to maintain comfort. During the procedure, controlled electromagnetic energy is delivered to the region where the sweat glands reside, which safely destroys the sweat glands without any surgical incisions or cuts.

How long is the appointment?

Your office visit appointment will generally last about an hour. Two procedures spaced three months apart are required to maximize the results.

What happens after the procedure?

There is minimal to no downtime following the procedure. A mild over-the-counter pain medication may be recommended, along with the use of ice packs for a few days. You should be able to return to normal activities or work right after the procedure, and you can typically resume exercise within several days. Some localized soreness or swelling is normal, and typically clears within a few weeks. Some patients have short-term altered sensation in the skin of their underarms or upper arms, which gradually disappears.

What results can I expect?

Most patients report a dramatic reduction of sweat immediately after treatment. In clinical trials, the average sweat reduction was 82 percent. In addition, patients report a significant decrease or elimination of armpit body odour.

How long will the results last?

As the sweat glands do not regenerate after they have been eliminated, the results are lasting.

Don’t I need my underarm sweat glands?

Your body contains over 4 million sweat glands, with only about 2% located in the underarms. Eliminating 2% of the body’s sweat glands will not affect its ability to cool itself.
